Intent

At Parklands we want all children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.To develop a firm understanding of all the key concepts and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly. Our pupils will become able to reason and solve problems by applying mathematics to a variety of different of different contexts related to the real world.

At Parklands we see mathematics as being essential for everyday life and understanding our world. It enables the development of pupils’ natural ability to think logically and solve puzzles and real life problems.  Pupils learn to think creatively and make links between mathematical concepts through exploring patterns in the number system, shape, measures and statistics.  They make and discuss propositions, explaining their reasoning and justifying their answers.  Through teaching which uses the mastery approach, children develop the skills, knowledge and efficient methods of calculation necessary to support their economic future and problem solving in life.  Mathematics is all around us and it underpins much of our daily lives and our future as individuals and collectively.  At Parklands our aim is to ensure that all children have the best grounding in mathematics and that they are challenged regularly to grow in their love of mathematics.

Implementation 

All classes are expected to have a daily Maths lesson using a mastery approach. These will include:

• Counting, recall of number facts, fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
• Clear differentiation to ensure there is appropriate challenge for all learners.
• Use of concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations are used to support conceptual understanding and to make links across topics.
• Children are individually assessed and rewarded for rapid recall of number bonds (KS1) and times tables (Years 2-6).
• Children are assessed regularly against the concepts they are being taught.

To encourage greater mental mathematics skills, we encourage parents to support their children at home through learning multiplication and division facts linked to the times tables up to 12 x 12. More detail about multiplication tables can be found on the dedicated page.

All children are given mental maths targets, recorded on a certificate, a copy of which is given to them to take home to practice. These can be downloaded from the Maths Facts page.

• Most children reach end of year expectations.
• Children’s progress is tracked on regularly using a OTrack.
• Well planned sequences of learning support children to develop and refine their maths skills.
• Children are able to independently apply their knowledge to a range of increasingly complex problems.
• Children are reasoning with increased confidence and accuracy.
